How a UNSPSC code works

The United Nations Standard Products and Services Code (UNSPSC) gives every kind of product and service an eight-digit number, so buyers, suppliers and procurement systems describe the same thing the same way.

Each pair of digits narrows the one before it. Read 46182010 from left to right and it moves from safety equipment down to a single item: an N95 respirator.

Frequently asked questions

What is a UNSPSC code?

UNSPSC stands for United Nations Standard Products and Services Code. It is an eight-digit classification for products and services, managed by GS1 US for the United Nations Development Programme, and used by governments, companies and procurement systems around the world.

How do I read the eight digits?

In four pairs. The first two digits are the segment, the next two the family, then the class, and the last two the commodity. A code that ends in zeros stops at a higher level: 46180000 is the whole "personal safety and protection" family.

How accurate is the lookup?

Each answer shows the commodity it matched and a match score. Always check that the commodity fits what you buy, especially for close variants such as nitrile and non-nitrile gloves. When the match is weak, the lookup says so; describing the product in more detail, such as its material or what it is used for, usually helps.

Is it free?

Yes. Single lookups are free with no sign-up. For a list of products, tell us where to send the spreadsheet and we code up to 500 lines at a time.

Can you code our whole catalog or spend file?

Yes. Send up to 500 products at a time with the list form. For larger catalogs or a recurring feed, book a call and we will set it up with you.

Where can I buy the products I just coded?

In the Hubzone Depot marketplace, from inside your procurement system, or through our Spotbuy sourcing service for anything outside the catalog. Purchases through Hubzone Depot count toward HUBZone and women-owned small business (WOSB) goals.
